The days leading up to Memorial Day serve as a meaningful reminder of the importance of honoring the men and women who have served our country and preserving the spaces where communities can gather in remembrance. In Brownwood, one of those places is the Central Texas Veterans Memorial at Memorial Park.

Over the years, the Central Texas Veterans Memorial organization, alongside generous local businesses, organizations, and citizens, has helped transform Memorial Park into a place of reflection, education, and community pride. From monuments and memorial features to the playground and restroom facilities, much of the park has been made possible through monetary and in-kind donations from people who believe deeply in honoring local veterans and preserving their stories.

To support the continued growth of the memorial, the Brownwood Municipal Development District (BMDD) approved a $50,000 grant for the construction of a pavilion structure that will cover the memorial monuments and gathering area. The addition will create a more functional and welcoming space for ceremonies, educational programs, and community events throughout the year.

“Projects like this ensure we continue honoring the legacy of our veterans while creating spaces that bring our community together. The Central Texas Veterans Memorial is an important part of Brownwood’s story, and this investment helps preserve and strengthen that experience for future generations.”
Mayor Stephen E. Haynes

The pavilion structure will allow the memorial to better serve veterans, families, students, and visitors by providing protection from the elements and creating a more comfortable setting for gatherings and ceremonies year-round. The custom metal work for the project is being designed by Darrin St. Ama of Savage Saint Custom Ironworks, whose craftsmanship will contribute to the lasting character of the memorial.

While the project is rooted in remembrance and community pride, it also reflects BMDD’s broader mission of supporting initiatives that contribute to quality of life and economic development in Brownwood. Enhancements to community assets like the Veterans Memorial help strengthen tourism, attract visitors, and encourage activity that benefits local businesses, restaurants, and hotels.

Investments in projects like the Central Texas Veterans Memorial demonstrate how preserving history and supporting community spaces can also contribute to Brownwood’s continued growth and development.

As the community prepares to observe Memorial Day, Brownwood’s annual Memorial Day program at the Central Texas Veterans Memorial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25.

United States Congressman August Pfluger, an Air Force Academy graduate and former F-22 Raptor pilot with more than 300 combat hours, will serve as the keynote speaker. Brownwood native and United States Naval Academy graduate Jeff Lemmons will also speak during the program.

In addition, plaques honoring Calvin Evans of Blanket and the battleship USS Texas will be dedicated during the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.
