Downtown Brownwood Banquet Recap: Honoring Legacy, Highlighting Momentum, and Looking Ahead

Downtown Brownwood Inc.’s annual banquet offered an opportunity to celebrate both the legacy and the forward momentum of downtown Brownwood. The evening reflected a district continuing to gain strength through private reinvestment, destination activity, long-range public planning, and the businesses and partners whose steady commitment continues to shape the heart of the community.

A meaningful highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Downtown Legacy Award to The Glamour Shop, a business whose longstanding presence has helped define the character of downtown Brownwood across generations.

That recognition served as a fitting reminder that downtown success is built in more than one way. It is shaped not only by new projects and visible investment, but also by the businesses whose consistency, resilience, and long-term presence have carried downtown forward over time.

The evening also reflected on the continued role of the Brownwood Event Center Complex as a major driver of activity and visibility for the community. In 2025, the facility hosted 68 events and welcomed 18,720 attendees, while 48 events were already booked for next year. That level of use continues to reinforce the Event Center’s value not only as a community venue, but also as an economic asset that helps generate visitor traffic and local spending.

Momentum was also evident through the Feels Like Home Festival, which sold out in its current configuration and generated more than 33.6 million media impressions in its second year. Events like this continue to elevate Brownwood’s profile while contributing to the economic energy of downtown.

Looking ahead, downtown Brownwood remains positioned for additional destination activity. Among the major opportunities on the horizon is Brownwood’s hosting of the NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball National Championship in 2026 and 2028. The 2026 event is expected to bring 12 teams, more than 200 student-athletes, over 3,200 attendees across four days, and more than 400 hotel nights, further supporting local hotels, restaurants, retailers, and service businesses.

The banquet also highlighted the importance of continued private reinvestment in the district. Projects recognized during the evening included the Dippel Museum of the Wild, 201 Center Avenue, 307 Fisk Street, and The Fairway Club at 305 Center Avenue. Together, these efforts reflect growing confidence in downtown Brownwood and contribute to a stronger mix of commerce, destination appeal, and long-term value creation.

At 307 Fisk Street, that investment includes an approximately 1,500-square-foot, two-story lofted commercial space along with two stacked residential apartments, all available for lease. Projects like this help strengthen downtown not only as a place to visit, but as a place to invest, do business, and build daily activity.

Long-range public investment also remains an important part of downtown’s future. Phase I of the Downtown Master Plan includes Founders Crossing, the Silo Promenade and Courtyard, Fisk streetscaping, and Baker streetscaping. The current timeline reflects plan adoption in spring 2024, project identification in fall 2024, engineering and design from January 2025 through October 2026, bidding in late fall of 2026, and construction beginning in January 2027.

Those improvements are intended to support more than aesthetics. Planned work on Baker and Fisk includes roadwork, sidewalks, traffic signals, lighting, landscaping, and underground utilities, while downtown public parking is expected to increase from 98 spaces to 157 spaces, including expanded ADA access. Together, those improvements are designed to better support businesses, events, redevelopment, and the overall downtown experience.

One of the strongest examples of the partnership-driven approach behind this work is Founders Crossing, envisioned as a signature public space that connects Brownwood’s heritage with future growth. The site is supported through a property donation from TexasBank, reflecting the type of collaboration that continues to help move catalytic downtown projects forward.

More than anything, the Downtown Brownwood banquet served as a reminder that downtown’s story is being shaped by both legacy and momentum. It is being strengthened by businesses that have stood the test of time, by new investment bringing properties back to life, by events that draw people in, and by projects preparing downtown for its next chapter. Downtown Brownwood continues to move forward with purpose.
