Downtown Brownwood recently marked the reopening of the historic DeBusk Building at 114 Center Avenue, home of Brownwood Enterprises, following extensive restoration and renovation after last year’s fire.
Built in 1910, the First National Office Building was originally constructed as Brownwood National Bank and quickly became one of the city’s most notable commercial landmarks. With five floors, it was the first tall building in Brownwood and held the distinction of being the first building in the city with an elevator and indoor toilets. In 1921, the building became the First National Bank of Brownwood, further cementing its role in the community’s early commercial growth.
Ownership of the property changed several times over the years before the building was acquired by the DeBusk family in 1987. While many local residents commonly refer to the property as the DeBusk Building, the building’s official signage remains the First National Office Building. Since taking ownership, the DeBusk family has continued to preserve and invest in one of Downtown Brownwood’s most recognizable historic properties.
Today, the building continues to serve the Brownwood community by providing office space for small businesses and professional users in the heart of downtown. The property includes single and multiple office suites available for lease, supporting continued business activity and reinvestment in the downtown district. Existing office tenants, such Texas Parks and Wildlife, are housed on floors 2 and 3. Property owner has additional availability for full floor rentals, as well as lease space for future restaurant or bar on the first floor.
The project was also a recipient of the Brownwood Municipal Development District’s Building Improvement Incentive Program, which helps support qualified commercial property improvements and encourages continued private investment in Brownwood’s historic commercial core.
The reopening of the First National Bank Building reflects the importance of preserving historic assets while supporting long-term economic development and downtown vitality. Projects like this help reinforce Downtown Brownwood’s role as a center for business, opportunity, and community growth.
