Staff Reports

As our downtown expands, foot traffic is increasing in Brownwood. There has never been a better time to start a business in our growing town. Many have jumped at the opportunity and are hard at work preparing for their grand openings.

Cheers to More Beers

Following the success of Teddy's Brewhaus and Pioneer Tap House, there’s a new brewery in town and it’s kind of a big deal! In January, Brownwood welcomed Primal Brewery, and with it came some pretty unconventional flavors. Customers are no doubt intrigued by flavors like Banana Creme Seltzer, Peanut Butter Stout, and Busty Blonde, but the real star on the menu is Primal’s unique pickle beer. Don’t knock it till you try it because the pickle is truly making waves in the Brownwood community! Owner Carl Price deserves a big Congratulations for introducing another lively place to spend an evening downtown.

New Axe-perience

Since when has a simple axe spent so much time in the spotlight? Since two throwing houses came to town! Once an arcane sport of woodsmen and loggers, axe throwing is now resonating with people as a fun and unique activity. As something anyone can try, including children, two passionate throwing couples have finally brought the trend to Brownwood! Michael and Lindsay Bellow set their eyes on our thriving downtown market when looking to open a second location of The Axe House, originally opened in Fredericksburg. And wanting to contribute to Brownwood’s revitalization, natives Jason and Serena Dickey, have opened Twisted Axes. Both businesses are sure to hit the bullseye! Our community is happy to have you!

Elevated Dining

Locals eagerly await a new steakhouse hoping to open in May of 2022. With a restaurant, bar, and bakery, Lucille + Mabel will be a delicious all-inclusive dining experience known for dry-aged ribeye, New York strip, and filet mignon steaks. The eatery will serve elevated wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers throughout the week, then evolve into an upscale steakhouse with a twist on the weekends - the twist being that guests will get to dictate the thickness of their steak, and then watch a chef prepare it at their table. Again the dining experience will change on Sundays, this time to a family-style meal with a shared cut of beef and unlimited sides. As for dessert, the bakery in the back will serve pies and cake recipes that have been passed down for four and five generations. Finally, the owners have plans to transform what used to be two bank vaults into unique spaces for whiskey and tequila vaults, offering special tastings inside each. The opening of Lucille + Mabel might be the most anticipated of this year so far, as many mouths are already watering over their full-service, upscale menu.

Pass the Queso

Now open as of May 2nd is a familiar franchise, loved by all for their famous Baja tacos and white queso - Fuzzy's Taco Shop is entering the restaurant scene as an addition to Shaw's Marketplace! Locals will soon be able to enjoy Taco Tuesday on Fuzzy’s dog-friendly patio while sipping margaritas and crunching fajita nachos. With other fan favorites including flavorful tacos, burrito bowls, breakfast tacos, and guacamole, you simply cannot go wrong with dinner at Fuzzy’s.

Not Your Neighbor’s Backyard

Speaking of Shaw’s Marketplace, more growth is underway as the space is currently constructing a beautiful outdoor patio space. Complete with emerald turf, a shade covering, sprouting plants, and a momentous fire pit, Shaw's Backyard will be your new favorite hangout! Enjoy a meal, read a book, work on your laptop, have a few drinks, cozy up by the fire, soak in the sun, host a gathering - there are endless ways to enjoy this new space. We can even look forward to niche events and classes offered from the Shaw’s vendors themselves on the future lawn. Many thanks to Brasher & Co. and Garry Eoff for bringing this project to life, we can’t to watch it develop!

Elegant Vacation

After seeing how well received Shaw’s Marketplace has been, the next McCrane family endeavor is  Harper House -  a boutique-style Airbnb and event venue. As she remodels an old rustic farmhouse, Liz McCrane envisions a rental experience that’s more than just a place to lay your head at night. Visitors will truly feel at home with cozy cottage decor and personalized accommodations. A space as beautiful as the future Harper House is meant to be shared, which is why it will double as a unique event venue in the Texas Hill Country, perfectly suited for bridal showers, birthday celebrations, small elopements, and more. Those interested in the renovation can follow Harper House on Facebook and Instagram.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Brownwood is quickly becoming a hub for small town entrepreneurs to follow their dreams in an established, supportive community. We’ve welcomed dozens of successful businesses to town over the past few years and are excited to see what ideas will come in the future. Take it from Carl Price, the McCrane family, the Nance’s and the Meadow’s, there’s never been a better time to start a business. Brownwood Municipal Development District (BMDD) is equipped with the resources and assistance you need to get started. We wish nothing but the best to our four new downtown businesses and are grateful for their participation in Brownwood’s downtown revitalization. Show your support by visiting these new spaces and engaging with them on social media.
